gorillapod zoom

The Gorillapod Zoom is a fantastic camera tripod, theres no doubt in that. But is it right for you as a photographer? Well it really all depends on several factors, do you have fantastic zoom lenses that have more distance than your average backroom telescope? if so the zoom is great for dealing with those heavy off balanced lenses.

Comparing a gorrillapod zoom tripod to a standard zoom lense slr tripod is a bit of a false comparison. While traditional tripods remain a great way of getting static positioning for your heavy beast of an slr it is horses for courses and in some situations the gorrilapod comes out on tops. In our test we tried taking photo’s with a standard slr capacity tripod and a gorrilapod-zoom. We took a whole range of shots and found the stability of both to be fairly equal. We used a mini tripod without any of its leg extensions out to compare with the gorillapod, as this really is the only issue we found with it – its height means its use is restricted to finding something at the height you want the shot to be at.

While attaching the gorrilapod to a tree seemed to work it was in fact more hassle than using an extension of a standard tripod was. In the same way though the gorrila pod did nearly match the head level shots against the mini tripod despite not actually having the extra 3ft of leg, being so versitile it is feasible that you could even attach it to a higher object, something a standard tripod just cant do. All in all the gorrilapod zoom is an excellent little solution to 85% of your tripod requirements, as they are pretty cheap we would recommend you get a zoom and a regular 6ft telescopic tripod, this should cover all bases for you as a photographer.
